I attended my very first Pride March when I was 19. That would have been summer of 81 or 82 I believe. My very first boyfriend, Tom, wanted me to go with him. I was nervous and scared and didn't know what to expect. I hadn't come out yet and I'd heard so many horrible things about gay people.
Marching down 5th Avenue in Manhattan we stopped at one point and Tom turned to me and said, "Look before you." So I did. Then he said, "Now look behind you." And I did. It struck me how many thousands upon thousands of people were still behind us considering the many thousands already before us. And we still had not gotten to our destination. Back then it started at Christopher Street and went to Central Park.
I will never forget that as long as I live.
